travel - Kalaloch Beach camping

a campin we did go!

friday after noon we packed up the pups, my someday sister-in-law Sarah, and her dog Boomer and made our way around the Olympic Peninsula to Kalaloch Campground.  the drive from Seattle is about 3.5 - 4 hours including a ferry ride and the inevitable stopping along the way.  the trip north winds along crescent lake which is most beautiful and scenic and makes it's way through Forks, WA eventually making it to our camping spot.

the drive is part of the journey; leaving the urban downtown of seattle and driving into more remote wilderness with every mile.  i really appreciated the drive through Forks, WA which has recently gained fame as the fictional home to Bella Swan and Edward Cullen of the Twilight series.  the whole town had signs trying to attract Twilight tourist, "Bella shops here!",  "Edward Cullen did not sleep here."  there were Twilight tours, and Twilight stores and we had a great time just reading the signs on our way through town.

after the long journey we finally arrived at our site and set up camp.

this is one side of our site.  we reserved early to get a large site so we could all fit.

this is the other side of our campsite.  see that little tent in the foreground?  that is our tent - the little two man tent that was very, very, cozy with JD and i, a 95 lb rottie, Rainier and 40 lb Baker.  needless to say we weren't cold throughout the night even though the temperatures at night were in the 40's.

another interesting thing to note about this camping trip was that Friday we had 6 people and 6 dogs; Saturday the count went to 8 humans and 7 dogs.  what this meant was there was a lot of, "Camper quit barking, Baker no jumping, Petey's climbing the cage again."  there is certainly a bit a craziness involved with tight spaces and that many pups no matter how well behaved they were and out of this group there were two dogs that were less than a year old and two others that were less than 3 years old - ahhh puppies.

here JD and our friend J took 6 of the pups down the beach for a walk.  what a sight i tell you hilarious. not only were there all ages of dogs but all different kinds as well.  we had the smallest in a yorkie, the largest with a rottie, and saturday we even had a chow.  it was certainly a motley crew.

sat morning JD and i went down to the beach with the pups and explored the tidal pools that were left over from the low tide.

Baker learned to go into the water which meant that the two of them wanted in the water as much as possible.

here Rainier and Boomer hang out.  Rainier was very interested in the kite flying near by.

Baker managed to get sand all over my blanket.  he really enjoyed his first day at the beach.  (side note: don't you like Baker and Rainier's matching patriotic dog collars.  i got them special for this camping trip.)

we spent the afternoon drinking beers by the fire and eating food.  i slept like a rock that night, even with my husband and two dogs in a very small tent!  camping was a good time, although, next time i think we will go solo with just our two pups so we can relax.

happy wednesday.  hopefully you have a fun camping trip planned soon.  isn't the pacific northwest beautiful?  it is why i put up with the rainy winters.
